"I was in the dark,’ he said softly. ‘There was nothing there but shadows, and I was a shadow, and I knew that I was dead, and that it was over, all of it. And then I heard your voice. I heard you say my name, and it brought me back." -Jace Wayland

About the author

Cassandra Clare is the author of The Mortal Instruments series and The Clockwork series.  She was born in Teheren, Iran.  Her American parents loved to travel and she spent most of her childhood from seeing the Himalayas to France, England, and Switzerland all before she was ten years old.  Because of all the moving, Cassandra Clare spent her time engaged in a good book and always carried one every where she went.  During high school she lived in Los Angeles and would write amusing stories, including "The Beautiful Cassandra."  It was based on a Jane Austen short story of the same name (which later was inspired to her current pen name).  Her real name is Judith Rumelt, but now is recognized as Cassie instead from her fans. Cassie lived in Los Angeles and New York after college.  She worked in many entertainment magazines and even some rather suspect tablods.  Some of Cassie's books include reglious views.  She shares with Simon the ancestry of being Jewish, though she is not religious.

Her Work

She began working on City of Bones in 2004.  It was inspired by the urban landscape of Manhattan.  Which later became her favorite city.  She began to turn from more realistic and every day events kind of writing towards fantasy fiction.  She wrote fantasy fiction full time in 2006 and hoped to never write another article about Paris Hilton, The Kardashians, or even Brad Pitt.  Her first professional writing sale was a short story by the title "The Girl's Guide to Defeating the Dark Lord."  It was in a Baen anthology of humor fantasy.  Cassie prefers to work at local coffee shops and restaurants instead of at home with all the distraction of her tv's and two cats.  She likes having her friends around when she works who make sure she sticks to her deadlines.  When she wrote City of Bones she used an outline to help carry out her plot and story line.  She also wanted to make sure the mythology of the series was rooted in world mythology.  She used demons made by the people of Japanese, Indian, and Tibetan decent to help with her creatures along with some she created on her own.

City of Bones

City of Bones was released in 2007 by Simon & Schuster.  This book became a trilogy and in April 2011, the fourth installment was published.  The City of Bones, City of Ashes, and City of Glass is the first Mortal Instruments cycle, while City of Fall Angels, City of Lost Souls, and City of Heavenly Fire complete the second.  It involves the same characters as the first but it begins a new turn of events.  A movie is being created and will be released August 23, 2012 with Clary Fray being played by Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower playing Jace.
